Student Teaching Academic and Retention
Contact: kpstar0910@gmail.com
KP STAR is a student-run program designed to promote the retention and increase graduation rates of Filipin@s at UCSD in order to advance the hope of achieving diversity at institutions of higher education. Through its three distinct yet cohesive components, KP STAR strives to cultivate and strengthen a unified community that supports each other through struggle and challenges each other to realize personal and academic success.
Kuya/Ate/Ading
The Kuya/Ate/Ading component provides veteran-member mentors to the incoming freshpeople to facilitate their college transition. This component inspires a sense of family so as to instill values of support and unity amongst its members. The Kuyas and Ates encourage the Adings to get engaged and make positive and progressive change within the community.
Peer Counseling
The Peer Counseling component serves as a resource for the students to understand their personal troubles and academic difficulties that interfere with the realization of their academic success. Peer Counselors are trained in handling issues such as social and academic transition, community involvement, and personal and leadership development.
Tutoring
The Tutoring component is an outlet for additional academic support outside of classroom. Tutors offer specialized one-on-one and group study assistance as well as workshops on coping with common academic difficulties.
