“The Slant-Eyed: Narrating a Historical Moment for Filipina America” -

Presenter: Jason Magabo Perez earned his M.F.A. in Writing & Consciousness
from the New College of California.
His mother, Leonora Magabo Perez, is a dedicated registered nurse at the
Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital.
-Two nurses, Filipina Narciso and Leonora Perez, were tried for the murder
of several patients in an Ann Arbor VA hospital during the 1970s. The
case, fabricated with racist overtones, was highly circumstantial and
eventually led to a guilty verdict. Because of the tireless efforts of the
legal defense team and community activists, an appeal was finally granted.
However, the FBI immediately dropped its case and the nurses were set
free. The mystery was never solved. Join this presentation to discuss the
story with one of the nurses herself and her son, who is undertaking a
novel project that documents her experiences.
